Porntip delights in India Open win
New Delhi: The inaugural India Open Superseries could not have asked for better ambassadors to emerge champions at the end of the week. Lee Chong Wei, the world’s best player, and the young-and-coming Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand walked away with the singles crowns on a memorable final day. Japan took two gold (men’s and women’s doubles), while Indonesia won the mixed doubles. Continue reading

Porntip weaves web around Yip
Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, she of the unpronounceable name, stole the hearts of badminton aficionados on the semifinals day of the India Open Superseries. The 19-year-old Thai entered the final after tying the attacking Yip Pui Yin in knots with an immaculate display of deceptive badminton. Porntip will take on Bae Youn Joo of Korea in the final on Sunday.
In the men’s singles, 34-year-old Peter Gade staved off Park Sung Hwan, while No.1 Lee Chong Wei looks set for his third Superseries title this year after breezing past Hu Yun. Continue reading

Sourabh, Guru Sai run out of steam
New Delhi: After an upset-laden beginning to the India Open Superseries, the quarterfinals followed the seedings on Friday. World No.1 Lee Chong Wei and No.3 Peter Gade progressed into the semifinals; the one minor blip being that of No.2 Taufik Hidayat, in his loss to former Asian champion Park Sung Hwan. New Delhi: India suffered a massive heartbreak on the second day of the India Open Superseries, with home favourite Saina Nehwal crashing out, but two local hopefuls salvaged the day with unlikely wins. While world number four and top seed Saina Nehwal of India crashed out 21-17 21-19 to Japan’s Ai Goto in the first round, her compatriots Sourabh Verma and Guru Sai Dutt pulled off impressive wins. Tago shot down by Sourabh Verma
New Delhi: Sourabh Verma, a young prodigy unknown outside a small bunch of Indian badminton followers, continued his sensational run at the India Open Superseries by dumping out seventh seed Kenichi Tago of Japan in the second round on Wednesday. Praneeth, Anup make the main draw
New Delhi: India’s brightest young stars made it to the main draw of the India Open Superseries at the Siri Fort Complex here on Tuesday. Among those who qualified were Sourabh Verma and world junior semifinalists HS Prannoy and Sai Praneeth. Anup Sridhar, attempting a comeback into national reckoning, also made it to the main draw.
