Jwala/Ashwini crash to Qing Tian/Yunlei
Seoul (Korea): The Indian challenge at the Korea Open Premier Super Series ended with the women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa falling to a Chinese pair in the quarterfinals. Jwala and Ashwini were packed off by eighth seeds Qing Tian and Zhao Yunlei 21-16 21-15 in exactly half-an-hour. The Korea Open is the first million dollar prize money event in badminton. Diju: It’s all about confidence
No Indian pair in history has reached the heights that Valiyaveetil Diju and Jwala Gutta scaled during their dream year of 2009. Beginning the year ranked 38, the duo rocketed to No.7 on the back of some sensational results, including the defeat of world champions Nova Widianto/ Lilyana Natsir at the Korea Open Super Series. Jwala, Chetan sign up with Li Ning
Aug 8: China-based badminton company Li Ning announced its entry into the Indian market with a smart move ahead of the World Championships, signing up top Indian players Chetan Anand and Jwala Gutta on Saturday. The contract, which extends for two years for an undisclosed amount, will mean that the high-profile couple will use Li Ning’s equipment and playing gear when not turning out for team events. Most significantly, it is for the first time that top Indian players have moved away from market leader Yonex, which sponsors the national badminton team. Continue reading
