Trupti Murgunde wins Czech Open

Brno, 27 Sept 09: Indian No.3 Trupti Murgunde won the women’s singles event of the Yonex Czech International that concluded on Sunday at Brno in the Czech Republic. Unseeded Trupti beat all her higher-ranked opponents convincingly in straight games to win her 1st international title in nearly ten months. Trupti, at 26, has had her share of injury woes in the past one year, but made a good comeback with this win.
In the final Trupti got the better of Jeanine Cicognini of Switzerland 21-17 21-12. In the semifinals Trupti beat Carola Bott of Germany (21-13, 21-15) who upset the top seed Kristina Ludikovo of Czech Republic. In the quarterfinals Trupti beat Camilla Overgaard of Denmark in straight games (21-10, 21-15). Earlier Camilla had beaten India’s Gayatri Vartak (22-20 21-19)
However there was disappointment for national champion Sayali Gokhale. Seeded No.2 in the tournament and after her good showing in the tournaments this year Sayali surprisingly lost in the quarterfinals to sixth seed Jeanine Cicognini of Switzerland (21-13, 21-18). The Indian players now move to Germany for the Bitburger Open to be held from 1st to 4th October 2009.

About badmintonmania

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the Indian in Thoreau's Walden who makes cane baskets and is surprised nobody wants them. A. was talking about discipline when she said: "But Dev, if you want to move ahead in life, you'll have to be like that," and she may as well have defined everything else for me. I've played the low percentage game for too long to believe there's anything in it but the romance; the odds keep getting jacked up higher and higher; and you may be a good Idealist but a worse Fool.
