Saina is world No.3, enters quarters

Jakarta, June 24: Saina Nehwal entered the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open Super Series on Thursday – but must have been equally gratified by news that she had climbed to world No.3 on the strength of her Singapore Open Super Series title last week. The world ranking means she is the highest-ranked Indian after Prakash Padukone, who had achieved the No.1 ranking. Her coach Pullela Gopichand, after his All England win in 2001, had climbed up to No.4.
On Thursday, Saina continued with her great run, beating Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria 21-12 21-17 in 29 minutes. The top seed is favourite to retain her title. The Indians had another encouraging performance to show, from Guru Sai Dutt, who stretched All England finalist Kenichi Tago to three games. Tago eventually won 11-21 21-18 21-11.

About badmintonmania

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the Indian in Thoreau's Walden who makes cane baskets and is surprised nobody wants them. A. was talking about discipline when she said: "But Dev, if you want to move ahead in life, you'll have to be like that," and she may as well have defined everything else for me. I've played the low percentage game for too long to believe there's anything in it but the romance; the odds keep getting jacked up higher and higher; and you may be a good Idealist but a worse Fool.
