Badminton players attract whopping payoffs in IPL-style league

Pune: A mini badminton revolution was launched on Sunday in Pune – the birthplace of modern badminton. An IPL-style league finally took off, with the auction of 79 players – bringing some of them a windfall that they’d never have expected in their wildest dreams.
Doubles player Jishnu Sanyal attracted the maximum bid of a whopping Rs 81,000 –peanuts by cricket standards but huge money in badminton, for this involves matches over three weekends. Continue reading

Pune pioneers IPL-style badminton league

Bangalore, Feb 4: After plenty of talk of replicating the IPL model in other sports, a taluk badminton association in Maharashtra has taken the initiative of organizing an inter-club league beginning in May this year. The Haveli Taluka Badminton Association, founded in 2008, has finalized a league based on the IPL model, and an auction date of February 20 has been set. Uday Sane, an international referee and Jt Secretary of the Pune District Badminton Association, is the man behind the initiative. The league will comprise of six teams based in Maharashtra, and will include only players hailing from the state. Continue reading

Author of new circuit, now a forgotten figure

Thoughts of the Malaysian Open…

Few experiences match the high of Kuala Lumpur. Sometimes words are so inadequate. Wei Loon, whom I’d met at the Denmark Open, was waiting for me at 1am at the KL airport. He put me up at his mother’s place; it was a 45-minute drive. The next day I met Michael, and he suggested I shift to a room at his academy because it’d be easier to travel to the stadium.
