The intersection of memories… and a stolen bag

Copenhagen Airport evokes powerful memories. It’s an intersection, as all airports are, an intersection of incoming and outgoing flights and memories. Just last year, same time, I was at the Starbucks cafe, chatting with Jens, with the Indonesian team (several Olympic and world champions: Taufik, Kido, Setiawan, etc) sitting around playing cards, when someone stole my bag. Saina climbs up to No.3

Kuala Lumpur: Riding on her Swiss Open triumph, ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has regained the number three place in the latest world ranking. Saina, who missed the Malaysian Super Series early in the year because of a ligament injury and then suffered quarterfinal exits at the Korean Open and the All England Championships, notched up her first title of the season in Switzerland last week. GUTS Debate: Time for petroleum companies to compete as individual teams?

For a long time, the team event at the national championships has been reduced to a formality. The outcome is known even before the event starts – for the team event can be won only by one outfit – the PSPB (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board), which is actually a combined team drawn from all the petroleum companies. It is time to rethink the relevance of fielding a unified PSPB team. The PSPB boasts of every top player in the country, reducing the team event at the nationals to a formality, and robbing it of its competitive nature. Continue reading

Badminton players attract whopping payoffs in IPL-style league

Pune: A mini badminton revolution was launched on Sunday in Pune – the birthplace of modern badminton. An IPL-style league finally took off, with the auction of 79 players – bringing some of them a windfall that they’d never have expected in their wildest dreams.
Doubles player Jishnu Sanyal attracted the maximum bid of a whopping Rs 81,000 –peanuts by cricket standards but huge money in badminton, for this involves matches over three weekends. Continue reading
